How PST Compares

Various treatment and coating techniques are used in different applications. PST surface treatment excels where toughness, enhanced resistance to galling and heat checking, and dimensional consistency are essential.

Compared to conventional gas nitriding, PST surface treatment penetrates deeper (up to 125 μm, versus 10~50 μm). This means that PST treated tooling lasts longer and also can be regrinded for prolonging its life.

Compared to conventional gas nitriding, PST surface treatment provides greater surface hardness (HRc 71~75, versus HRc 62~66), and due to its low temperature process, PST does not create distortion and size changes that gas nitriding might create. PST also does not increase brittleness and surface cracks.

Compared to conventional PVD coating, PST surface treatment does not create size changes (~0 µm, versus 1~5 µm). PST also does not delaminate after use or regrinding.

Compared to conventional PVD coating, PST surface treatment treats all surfaces of the tooling evenly and does not suffer from line-of-sight issues.

Please give us the opportunity to show you how PST surface treatment can improve your tooling and components by:

  • Increased surface hardness
  • Superior elasticity
  • Enhanced galling, heat checking and corrosion resistance
  • Dimensional consistency and stability
